Mr. Avi Barda is V.P. R&D of Shiron Satellite
Communications. Avi has led the development of the
company's products since its foundation in 1996. He
is responsible for building and managing of Shiron’s
R&D team developing satellite modems and satellite
Internet access systems. Shiron products are based
on state of the art technology, and position Shiron
as a leader in the two-way satellite IP systems. Avi
has served at the IDF in several positions in the
development of communication systems. He received
his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Tel-Aviv University.

Eli
Flournoy is a Senior International Assignment Editor
for CNN, the first 24 hour global news network. After
graduating from Indiana University with a BA in Political
Science and African Studies in 1991 Eli Flournoy went
to work for CNN Headline News as a writer then writer/producer.
From 1993 he has worked on CNN's International Desk,
first as a Producer for CNN's International Affiliate
Service - International Newsource, then as an International
Assignment Editor, part of CNN's team coordinating
news coverage outside the United States. Currently
he is Senior International Assignment Editor - most
recently in charge of CNN's Baghdad coverage during
the War in Iraq. |

Eli Flournoy has field produced for CNN in Indonesia,
Malaysia, HongKong, Israel and the Palestinian Territories,
Jordan, Angola and Great Britain. He lives in Atlanta
with his beautiful wife, and ice cream mogul, Jill,
11 year old daughter Dakota and 9 year old son Cole.

Saleh Gunawan received a two year scholarship from the
state own telecommunications operator known as Perumtel,
to study at the premier technical university of Indonesia,
the Institute of Technology – Bandung (ITB). After
graduating in 1968 as a telecommunications engineer,
he worked at PT Telkom as a support engineer for telegraph/telex
service. In 1969 Saleh Gunawan was assigned to a joint
venture with ITT forming the first international satellite
company in Indonesia, PT Indosat.

Upon
the signing of procurement contracts for the Palapa
Domestic Satellite System, Gunawan was assigned as
Telkom representative in Los Angeles, CA, during development
and factory acceptance of spacecraft, launch vehicles
and ground stations.
In the 1980s, Gunawan was responsible for planning
the entire Telkom network. It was during his tenure
that electronic digital switching was introduced,
and he helped to create PT Satellite Palapa Indonesia
(Satelino). Established in 1993, Satelindo was the
first new private telecommunications operator, being
granted domestic satellite, international and cellular
licenses. Gunawan was a member of the Board of Directors
and subsequently the President of Satelindo. |

David
Hartshorn is Secretary General of the Global VSAT
Forum, the London-based non-profit international association
of the VSAT industry. The
Global VSAT Forum consists of more than 160 members
from every major region of the world and from every
sector of the industry, including satellite operators,
manufacturers, system integrators, and other service
providers.

Hartshorn
leads the Forum’s efforts to facilitate the
provision of VSAT-based communications solutions throughout
all nations of the world. He works to support national-,
regional- and global-level policy makers as they formulate
state-of-the-art satellite regulatory frameworks.
He is responsible for creating greater awareness of
the commercial, economic, political and technological
advantages that VSAT-based communications provide.
Mr. Hartshorn also currently serves as Rapporteur
for an ITU programme on satellite regulation in developing
countries; is a Member of the Satellite Action Plan-Regulatory
Working Group, the Brussels-based satellite-industry
group that provides inputs to the European Commission.
David Hartshorn has worked in the satellite communications
industry for 14 years, serving in sales, business
development, publishing, and association offices based
in North and Southeast Asia, North America and Western
Europe.
He has been published in hundreds of editions of magazines
and newsletters, and has spoken and chaired at conferences
and seminars in every major region of the world. Hartshorn
is on the Board of Directors of the Society of Satellite
Professionals International, and is President of its
UK Chapter. |

Kei
Hata was elected to the upper house of the Japanese
Diet, called the House of Counselors, where she helped
shape government policy in areas of technology and
economic development. Upon graduation with a degree
in French literature from Waseda University, she joined
NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) and became the
youngest newscaster to anchor Japan's most popular
evening news program.Ms. Hata studied and worked in
France before returning to her native Japan and her
successful run for national office, which she occupied
from 1995 to 2000. |

Today, she runs the Sakushin Gakuin School along with
her husband, Hajime Funada, while she pursues a PhD
in Human Environment Science (Biopolitics) at
Ochanomize University Graduate School.

Virgil
Labrador is the editor of Satnews Daily and Weekly editions,
the International Satellite Directory and the monthly
e-zine, SATMAGAZINE. He has worked in various capacities
in the satellite industry, more recently, as marketing
director of the Asia Broadcast Center in Singapore--a
full-service teleport owned by the US broadcasting company,
CBS. He has co-written several books on media management
and communications policy and is currently working on
a history of the communications satellite industry.
He holds a master's degree in communications management
from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University

Robin
Gambu Wani Latio is from South Sudan. He went to school
in Uganda, and obtained his B. Sc. (Hons) in Agricultural
Science from Nairobi University in Kenya in 1992. Before
coming to the US, Latio worked for an NGO that provides
primary education for South Sudanese refugee children
in Kenya, Uganda and those displaced within the country.
In 2000, Latio obtained an Associate degree in Information
Technology from Cincinnati State Technical and Community
College. In 2002, he obtained his M.A in International
Relations from Ohio University. Latio is currently pursuing
graduate studies (Ph.D) in Instructional Technology
in OU. Latio's general research interest is in the application
of technology (Web based distance learning) to provide
mass access to education particularly by the populations
in rural areas. |

Dr.
Shaul Laufer is the President and Co-founder of Shiron
Satellite Communications. He held senior positions at
Tadiran, Linkabit and the Israeli Ministry of Defense
where he was instrumental in the R&D of CDMA networks.
Dr. Laufer was a visiting lecturer at Tel Aviv University
where he received Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc. degrees in
Electrical Engineering. He is the author of numerous
papers on various aspects of Digital Communications.
Dr. Laufer is the inventor of several patents on different
aspects of Satellite Communications. |

Shuho
Otani is a graduate student in international development
program at the Center for International Studies at
Ohio University. After graduation with a Master’s
degree in mechanical engineering from Waseda University
in Tokyo, Japan she was hired by Metsu Laboratory
and worked there as a lab researcher. Meitsu Ad, then
employed her as a director of advertising, and a manager
for exhibitions in Hong Kong and mainland China. After
two years, she began working for the telecommunication
company Fujitsu Limited.

As an engineer, she worked in the Mobile and Wireless
Systems Division in the Overseas Technology Development
Department. The range of her job responsibilities included
developing telecommunication channels as well as technical
support for overseas marketing and sales of Fujitsu
wireless systems in the Pacific-rim regions and Europe.
It also included designing and preparing professional
conferences, seminars and product exhibitions to attract
potential business partners and customers from around
the world. At the present time, her study is focused
on telecommunications and development in the Asia/Pacific
region. |

Johanes
Indri Prijatmodjo is Vice President, Engineering &
Services Development, PT Satelindo. He graduated from
the Institute of Technology at Bandung in 1986 and
completed certificates in Astronautical Engineering
and Telecommunications Engineering at UCLA. Indri
began his career in telecommunications in 1987 when
he joined PT Telkom as a telecommunications planner
and subsequently a staff engineer. |

His involvement in satellite communications began at
PT Telkom when he was assigned to the Palapa B4 project,
and then joined Satelindo in 1993 for the development
of Palapa C. Between 1997 and 1998 he was Satellite
Engineering and Frequency Coordination Senior Manager,
the position he held until his current responsibility.

Phillip
L. Spector is the managing partner of the Washington,
D.C., office of the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind,
Wharton & Garrison LLP. His practice focuses on
telecommunications, with particular emphasis on high-technology
companies. Spector is the former Chairman of the American
Bar Association’s International Communications
Committee. He has co-authored a book entitled Communications
and Technology Alliances, is editor of a weekly newsletter
on telecommunications developments. |
Phillip
Spector received his undergraduate education at the
University of California, Santa Barbara in political
science in 1972. At Harvard University he attended
the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and was
awarded a Master's degree in Public Policy and J.D.
degree in 1976.
From 1976-1977, Spector served as law clerk to Judge
James L. Oakes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
Second Circuit and later as law clerk to Justice Thurgood
Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court. |

Takei received the B.E. and the M.E. degrees in communication
engineering from the University of Electro Communications,
Tokyo, Japan, in 1991 and 1993, and the Ph.D. degree
from Keio University, Tokyo, Japan, in 2003.
In 1993 he joined Japan Communication Satellite Company,
Inc.(Now
JSAT Co. http://www.jsat.net),
where he is senior system engineer for
satellite payload and satellite internet. He has been
a research member
of WIDE Project(http://www.wide.ad.jp) since 1992. His
contributions at WIDE have been in satellite internet
deployment, including standardization activity in IETF
UDLR-WG. Since 2002 he has been a visiting researcher
at Keio University. |

Tsao is a master's student in Communication & Development
Studies, at the Center for International Studies, at
Ohio University. Her development specialization is instructional
technology. She is pursuing her second master's degree
in instructional technology. She earned her B.F.A. Degree

Chinese Culture University, Taipei, Taiwan. |

Basaanjav Undrahbuyan is a Ph.D. student in
the School of Telecommunications at Ohio University.
She earned her M.A. degree in telecommunications policy
from Ohio University, and B.Sc. degree in computer systems
engineering from Technical University, Novosibirsk,
Russia. Starting September 2002 Undrahbuyan works as
an Assistant to the Editor of the Journal. |

Waterson is VP of Business Development at Hawaii Pacific
Teleport (www.hawaiiteleport.com) which won the World
Teleport Association ‘Teleport Developer of
the Year 2003 ‘ award. Prior to joining the
Hawaii Pacific Teleport Mr. Waterson was VP of Business
Development at Subic Bay Satellite Systems Inc., a
teleport in the Philippines.
